The Law Is A Mirror
When we test ourselves by God’s law, we all discover
that we are guilty lawbreakers. Does this mean that the law is something bad? No, the problem is not with the law, the problem
is with ourselves! "The law is HOLY,
and the commandment HOLY and JUST and GOOD." (Romans 7:12). There is nothing wrong with the law! It helps us to see ourselves.
The law is a reflection of God Himself. God is holy and just
and good. Our civil law is also just and good. They protect us and others. That
is what the law is all about. The law shows forth God’s righteous requirements. The problem is that sinful
man is unable to do what God’s holy
law requires.
Think of yourself with a dirty face looking into a mirror. You might say,
“What’s wrong with this mirror? This mirror shows me with a dirty face!” Nothing is wrong with the mirror.
The real problem is that you have a dirty face. The good mirror shows you that you have a problem. In the same way God’s
good law shows sinful man that he has a problem (see Romans 7:14--The law does not have a problem, I DO!). For we know that the law is SPIRITUAL, but I am carnal, sold under sin.
The function of a mirror is to see a reflection. It can not clean.
Water can clean. We can be clean through the blood of Jesus but we must first realize we need to be cleansed.
Jesus is the WORD made flesh. The two go hand in hand. John 1 tells us that in the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.
So the law can't be bad because the law is Jesus!
